NEW GUINEA GOLDFIELDS
Interesting observations on the New v Guinea goldfields were' made at a meeting ; of shareholders of. the Mining Trust, Ltd., • in London:^recently by the chairman (Mr. "'Leslie Urquhart): New Guinea, he said, L 'contained the possibility of becoming a ' .very important goldfield. The question :- of transport was important, but not m- • ismmountable. . The company had drilled :" in ore for a length of 765 feet, showing • an average value through of 100s per ton 1 over a width of 38 inches.. 'The limits of ■ this zone had not yet been determined. At : the most northerly point yet exposed surface trenches had uncovered a lode 12 feet wide, assaying 43s 6d per ton, while at the; most southerly point three cross-' cuts through lodes had given an average of 85s per tOH over a width of more-than 16. feet. ■• In. the lower, area equally en--1 CQuragirig assays had been disclosed. Continuing,. Mr. Urquhart said: "The : goldfield itself covers an area of approximately 15 square miles, and included in ' this area are some 200 odd claims belong- . ing to different prospectors and companies which were, acquired and amalgamated by : the New 1 Guinea Goldfields, Limited. We have now, laid out a.programme of work ; 'with the 'management which has for its main object the rapid development of ore Teserves on certain veins and on the largest ore bodies so far discovered, and this concentration of work is proceeding ex- . peditiously and giving results up to our highest anticipations. lam hopeful that ' if the present development results continue we shall be in a position in the near future to speak of large developed and proven tonnages and values."
