NELSON NEWS
' OLD HOUSE BTJENED DOWN (From f.Our Own Correspondent.) NELSON, 4th January. One of the oldest houses in Nelson, known as Presbory Cottage, built in 1884, was destroyed by fire at 3.30 this morning. The flames had too good a hold when the alarm was given, and the brigade could do little to save the building, which was. unoccupied. It was owned by Mr. A. C. Snowden. The late Mr. Henry Seymour, grandfather of the late Mr. C. Y. Fell, had the house, built in Seymour avenue, mainly from material which was brought from England. So well wa.a it built that it was habitable after 86 years—a tribute to soundness of construction in the days when anything in the way of good buildings in Nelson, oi New Zealand for that matter, was practically unknown. Adjoining was another old home. Wakatu Lodge (recently pulled down), belonging to the late Mr. Alfred Pell, who, with Mr. Seymour, owned most of the- land in that part of the city. On Monday a party of Nelson orchardists will leave on a tour of the North Island, including Groytown and Hastings orchards, thence to Napier, Taupo, Wairakci, Eotorua, Arapuni, Hamilton) "Waitomo Caves, New Plymouth, and Wanganui. The party will return to Nelson on 19th inst. j Mr. C. W. Earle, C.M.G., managing editor of the "Dominion," arrived in Nelson this morning. .He intends spending a camping holiday at Okiwi Bay. __^____«__
