LYALL BAY SCHOOL
"BREAE-UP" SOCIAL.
A pleasant social evening was held' m the Lyall Bay School when the Home and School Association entertained the parents of the' pupils of the fifth and sixth standards. The double classroom was gaily decorated with coloured paper streamers. Amongst the visitors were Mr. A. C. Blake (member of the Education Board),. Mr. H. M. Harris (chairman of the School Committee) and Mrs. Harris, Mr. O. A. Banner (headmaster) and Mrs. Banner, Miss F. G. Eoberts (infant mistress), members of the teaching staff and school committee. Mr. F. W. Boyd (president of; the association) expressed the pleasure of the executive at the large attendance. He brieflly outlined the activities of the association during the past year, and its intention of raisin? sufficient money to complete the bitumen surfacing of the playground early next year. He appealed to all parents to support and join, the association. Mr. Harris (chairman of the school committee) was asked to .present the certificates and trophies. Mr. Harris expressed thanks for the honour, but said that as there was a very old friend of the school present, Mr. A. C. Blake (the former headmaster), he requested that he would officiate in his stead. Mr. Blake's acceptance was received with a great ovation from parents and scholars. Forty-five proficiency and five competency certificates were awarded. Before making the presentations Mr. Blake remarked on the fact. of there being only-girl recipients this year, and that it was an extraordinary condition in the existing arrangements that the boys had to attend a secondary school to obtain a proficiency certificate. He was assured that different arrangements would prevail next year, and that the school would be allowed to retain its sixth standard boys. The dux medal, given by the school committee, was awarded to Betty Brant, who also won the tennis racquet presented by the Home and School Association for the best all round sports girl. Dale Warren was the winner of the cricket bat donated by Mr. T, B. K. Burgess for the best all round sports boy. During the evening games were indulged in by the scholars, Miss P. B. Jones being at the piano. The parents took the opportunity to inspect the school work in the primer' classrooms. A most praiseworthy feature was the display of little Christmas novelties made by the infants as surprise gifts . for their parents. There were memorandum pads and milk coupon holders for "mother" and matchboxes for "father," all most tastefully decorated, and with the season's greetings added. Also wonderfully executed raffia and basket work. The ladies' committee of the association provided supper.
