PERMANENT JACKS
An interesting invention for jacking up the wheels of a car was recently submitted to the Eoyal Automobile Club, England, for an official test. Tho system consists of separate hydraulic jacks permanently attached to tho ends of each axle. These jacks are connected with a small pump and regulator fixed on the running board of tho car. It is possible by means' of the regulator to operate any one of the four jacks separately, or all four together. Tho system was tested On two cars, one weighing over 2$ tons and the other over 1| tons. In tho first case a rear wheel with tire deflated was raised clear from the ground in 23.8 seconds, and all four wheels were lifted clear of the ground in lmin 39sec. In the second case a back wheel was raised in 22.65 ec, and all four wheels were lifted clear of the ground in 27see.
To demonstrate the extreme ease of operating the system, a child of 9 years operated the jack and lifted a front wheel in lmin 35see. "The system can be fitted to any make of ear without drilling the chassis. Besides its mere jacking convenience and other good points, such a system of jacking is very convenient when working on the car, and particularly when it is necessary to get underneath, as tho whole car may be raised as high as the jacks permit.
A somewhat similar system is being demonstrated locally. The jacks (they are hydraulic) are set in operation electrically from the driver's seat. All that is necessary to raise any one wheel is to turn a dial on the dash-board,, press a switch, and the starter-motor does tie rest.
Car owners are advised by a tireproducing company to ehango the covers on each wheel by simply reversing the same cover on the same- wheel once a month, so that both sides of the cover wear down equally. Some wheels can be taken off and merely turned
round; in other cases much the same effect can be obtained by changing over the wheels from one side of the car to the other.
