PREVENTION OF CRUELTY
A committee meeting o£ the S.P.C.A. was held on Wednesday. The president 'Mr. G. Mitchell) presided. Miss A. M. White reported upon the annual essay competition, and the awards were made aa follows:— Class A.—Clare O. Abbott, 1; John' Hart, 2; Peggy Jackson, 3; Jack Hemi, 4; : 4-da Lawrence, 5; Robert Greeks, 6; Dal-1 ton J. Murphy, 7; Marie C. Abbott, 8. Class B.—Joan Hobbs, 1,; George Bish, 2; Ngaire Graham, 3; Madge Mallowes, 4; May Will, 5; Roland Patchett, 6; Victoria de Fental, 7; Muriel Pederson, 8. The thanks o£ the society were accorded to Mr. T. T. Hugo, through whose generosity the competition is made possible, and to Miss White, for judging the essays. It was reported that the Junior League is continuing to make good progress, and further enrolments have been received. Application forms for enrolment may be received at the society's office, Grey street, where information concerning the Junior League can be obtained. Further meetings o£ the Junior League will be held in the various suburbs in February next year. The inspector reported upon his investigations since the previous meeting, and stated that visits of inspection had been carried out in the Wairarapa district, where the position was satisfactory. A number of minor cases reported in town were satisfactorily dealt with.
