MARANUI CLUB'S RAFFLE

„; Ah unauthorised raffle, by.which it was hoped to obtain funds in aid of the club, resulted^ in the appearance in the Magistrate's Court to-day of Frank Chapman, representative of the Maranui Surf and Life-saving Club. Chapman, who, when the police visited the clubhouse recently, elected to appear for the club, 'was charged ■with having promised to dispose of the property by a raffle, whereby such proPf rty Y BB '*° be disPosed of by chance. He pleaded guilty. Chief-Detective Lopdell said that the defendant was one of the executive of the Maranm Club, which some few weeks a-o decided to raise some money by holding a raffle, for which no permission was sought worn-the Internal Affairs Department The lottery, irom which it'■•was hoped there ■would be a return of about £40 wis consequently illegal. The prizes were described as Christmas hampers, and they contained among other things hams, ale and spirits, and also some tooth picks which probably would have been handy m connection with the ducks. (Laughter ) With regard to the liquor, it was explained to-the club officials that if they disposed of it; they laid themselves open to another charge, but they gave an assurance.that they would endeavour to see that no liquor was concerned in the matter. The Chief Detective said he was given to understand that" illegal lotteries were-fairly prevalent. It was not an easy matter to get at those responsible Speaking to the defendant, the Magistrate (Mr. B. Page) said that the object for which the raffle was held was no doubt a laudable one, but the method adopted in an endeavour to raise money was unlawful. The defendant was fined £5 and costs.
