ENGLAND-CAPE EFFORT

BOTH AIRMEN KILLED |

CRASH IN NORTH AFRIW

British Official Wireless.

(Eeceived 19th December, 11 a.m.)

BUGBY, 18th December.

At midday no news had been received at the Air Ministry of the Fairey monoplane in which SquadronLeader Jones-Williams and PlightLieutenant Jenkins are attempting a. long-distance flight to the Cape, since i o'clock yesterday afternoon. The 'plane was then 50 miles off the northwest coast of Sardinia. A small wireless set is carried by the airmen on. which routine signals were to be transmitted every four hours and relayed by land stations to the Air Ministry. ISo undue anxiety is yet felt for the safety of the airmen, as it is considered likely that the silence is explained by the failure of the land' stations to intercept the airmen's signals. The Air Ministry announced this evening, however, that an unconfirmed report from Tunis had been received to the effect that the natives saw a large aeroplane" come down south of Tunis. Immediate Action is being taken to confirm the report and ascertain the identity of the machine.
