LONDON STREET ACCIDENTS

During the three months, April, May, and June, a total of 364 persons lost their lives in street accidents in London, reports the "Daily Telegraph." This is equivalent to a death-rate of four persons per day.

The total, which is equal to that for I the last three months of 1928, is unusually high for the second quarter of the year. In the corresponding period of 1928 the deaths numbered 270. Compared with the first quarter of this year, the latest figures show an increase of 113, but it should be borne in mind that, as a consequence of severe frosts in the first quarter, fewer vehicles were on 'he roads, and there were fewer pedestrians and children at play in the streets. The total number of street accidents was 32,216, in which the number of persons injured was 16,069. Private motor-cars headed the list of vehicles responsible for accidents. Trade and commercial vehicles and motorcycles ranked second and third. Details- are:—

Of the 364 persons killed, 329 were pedestrians, of whom 99 are stated to have "crossed the road without due care," while 32 "hesitated or faltered." Passing behind or in front of a stationary vehicle was responsible for 21 deaths.
