OVERSEAS TRADE

NOVEMBER RETURNS EXPORTS DOWN, IMPORTS UP "Evening Post," 19th December. From overseas trade returns for November as furnished by courtesy o£ the Customs there is shown a substantial excess of.-. importß over exports—for the month only. For the eleven months ended 30th November exports are substantially ahead of imports, but they are £800,000 less in value, and imports are £3,400,000 greater than when comparison is made ■with the external trade position of 1925. The exact returns for the month of November last, compared with November, 1928, are as follow:— Nov., 1920. Nov., 1928. £ £ Exports 2,875,50t 3,359,533 Imports 4,049,512 4,748,374 As compared with November of last year, the value of exports has decreased by £480,729, and the value of imports has also" decreased by £695,862. Imports for the month exceed exports by £1,170,708. Monthly returns, however, are always subject to shipping movements. The eleven months' returns afford a better standard of comparison, arid these are as follows:— 11 Months, 11 Months, ■ 1929. 1925. £ £ Exports 51,012,893 51,805,163 Importß 44,813,738 41,463,647 ; Excess exports £6,199,155 £10,341,506 The returns for the eleven months of 1929 compared with those of 1928 indicate a shrinkage in the value of exports of £792,270. With the fall in the price of ■wool and of dairy produce actually shipped during December the fall in the returns from exports is likely to appear much larger for the season than the figures for the eleven months indicate. Imports have increased for the period in review by £3,350,081, but their tendency ia downward' on the November showing. The trade balances in favour of the Domiriion on the returns for eleven months tKis year and last are as follow:— Excess of Exports. 11 Months. £ : 1929 6,199,155 .1928' 10,341,506 : Reduction at 30th November, 1929, of 4rade balance in favour of Dominion as -compared with balance at 30th November, 1928, £4,142,351.
