TECHNICAL COLLEGE

THAT WEST WING

MINISTER'S REPLY TO BOARD

Councillor W. H. Bennett, chairman of the Wellington Technical College Board of Governors, has received the following reply to the telegram sent by the board to the Minister of Education (the Hon. H. Atmore) in accordance with the decision arrived at by the board at its meeting on Monday last. The telegram stressed urgency of the sum agreed ,upon for the sale to the City Council of ■ the Education Board's property in Mercer street being made available at once, so that the work on the west wing of the Technical College could be proceeded with forthwith:—"Your telegram re completion of west wing of Wellington Technical College to hand. In reply, I have to inform you that it is impossible to wire authority, as the sum involved may be a matter for Cabinet decision. However, lam in full .sympathy with your desire for the erection of the necessary buildings; and, upon my return to Wellington from the South, I shall be pleased to see what can be done to expedite matters with a view to having the work started at an early date. Kind regards.—H. Atmore."

The Minister is to arrive in Wellington from Auckland on Saturday next, and will leave immediately for the South Island.

"The telegram looks, very hopeful," remarked Mr. Bennett to a "Post" reporter. "Outside of what is coming to the Board of Governors from the sale of the Education Board's Mercer street property, we are only asking the Government for £7000 to £8000. The west wing is to cost somewhere about £32,000, and if we get as our share £25,000 from the sale of that property, the Government will have to find the rest. So Cabinet has not only got to look to financing the work temporarily until we get the £.25,000, but has also to consider where the balance of the money is to come from."
