WORSER BAY CLUB
Althougli early on Saturday afternoon the -weather was threatening, it turned fine for the opening of the 1029-30 season of the Worser Bay Amateur Swimming and Life-saving Club. There was only a small attendance at the commencement of the proceedings, but during the afternoon the attendance increased, and the beach presented a gay appearance. ilie season was opened by Mr. E. bernple, H.P., who was introduced by the club president (Mr. W. H. Gerrie). Mr. bemple congratulated the club upon its record last * season, remarking that Worser Bay had:artnexed the Wallace Cup and the Novice Cup. I tt addition, the club received 25 awards for life-saving, which was a wonderful accomplishment. Keterring to life-saving generally, Mr. bemple said he was sure the citizens of Wellington appreciated the work that was being done by the life-saving clubs. Young men gave time, energy, and money, and risked their own lives to protect the lives of their fellow citizens. There could be no more loftier ideal than that. Not only Wellington citizens appreciated the effort, but visitors to Wellington also, who bathed on the beaches. Mr. Sei pie expressed his willingness to assist the club, and said'that it had been suggested that the small hill in the vicinity of the sheds at the corner of the road should be levelled, and the material used for the formation of- an area which could be used for recreation purposes, and to provide room for conveniences and a parking place for motor-cars. He hoped the City Council would carry out the work, and he urged the club, members to get busy. He was prepared to do all he could. It was a work that was necessary, and he did not see why some of the money that was being devoted to making improvements in other parts of the city should not be used for improving the foreshore. He joined with the president in the appeal for members. He trusted the season would be a happy one, and that the club's accomplishments would be greater • than in previous seasons.
In reference to club membership, Mr. Gerrie appealed to the residents to induce their children to join the club, saying that the club could well do With young, active swimmers. His. appeal, he said, was directed more to the population on the Miramar side, of .the hill. The club was willing to.teach any child.to swim. - /■ Mi-. A. C.
