WELLINGTON AND UNIVERSITY DRAW.
By still having three wickets to fall at the call of time, University made a draw of their match against >7el]ington. Some solid performances with the bat were registered, and it seemed that had the earlier batsmen been able to score somewhat faster than they did, the side would have had a good chance of heading Wellington's 407. Wellington did not continue with their innings on Saturday, and with six wickets down they declared it closed. University made a disastrous start when M'Kenzie was caught for 2 with the total at 3. Nelson joined Bailey, and the pair slowly took the total to 55, when. Bailey was run out. Nelson was batting confidently and nicely, and after Caldwell had made 13, he was partnered, by; Leys. The runs were still coming slowly, and it now looked as if the students were going for a draw. Nelson and Leys put on 71 runs for the fourth wicket before Nelson, who had played a very valuable innings, was caught by Hyder at mid-off. His total included seven 4's. Leys continued, and reached 62 before being clean bowled by Morgan. Macallan and Bagge each got into double' figures, and then M'Leod and Tripe became associated. With these two at the wickets^ the rate of scoring increased. Crisp shots to the boundary brought the score along, but the effort was a bit late to give University any chance of -winning. The pair had added 57 for the eighth wicket before stumps were drawn. Wellington tried, in all, eight bowlers, easily the most successful being Morgan, who captured three University wickets at a cost of nineteen runs. Cousins, who did a great deal towards keeping the batsmen quiet, secured two wickets, and Airey one. Details:— • WELLINGTON. First Innings. Total for six wicketa (declared). .... 407 UNIVERSITY.
