AMATEUR ATHLETICS

OPENING OF THE SEASON.

There is a good deal of activity in amateur athletic and cycling circles at the present time, participants in the various branches of the sport being engaged in preparing for the official start of the Wellington Centre's operations on track and field. The opening night of the season will be on Saturday week, and for this an attractive list of events is bound to bring competitors out in full force. One of tne features of the meeting •will be the commencement of the all-round cycling championship competition, in which M. Gane, who has been showing great form on road and track, will be opposed by C. Flett, now reported to be Eh.o-.ving a return to his old form, and other leading riders. Arrangements have also been made to stage a race for cyclists mounted on the old i "penny-farthing" machines, and there will be a boys' tricycle race to provide added amusement for the spectators. Excellent provision has been aoade for the athletes.
