STUDENTS' GOWNS

AN AUCKLAND-DECISION

DUNEDIN, This Day

Referring to a message that the students at Auckland University College will have to conform in future to the traditions of the British universities in regard to the wearing of gowns, Mr. H. Chapman, Registrar of the Otago University, said: "The wearing of gowns is an English tradition, but I am not prepared to say that gowns are compulsory at all English universities, although they are worn at all lectures at Oxford and Cambridge." In Scotland students did not, wear gowns, said Mr. Chapman. In New Zealand tho wearing of gowns had been compulsory at Canterbury • College for years. At Otago'University, none of the students wore gowns, arid most of tho professors did not wciir a cap and gown.when giving lectures. Gowning for lectures was an-old tradition, and" Mr. Chapman was not in favour of it.
