SCHOOL CHILDREN AND STREET TRAFFIC
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —It is time something was done for tlie children who attend Newtown School. Outside the school the traffic is often verjr heavy, and it is not safe for small children to cross, especially on windy days. For over ten yeara I attended Cleveland Street School, Sydney, and although the intersection of Cleveland and Castlereagh streets was not nearly so dangerous as that of Riddiford and Rintoul streets, we were always marched across four deep, the highest class only being exempt from, lines outside school. There were two divisions, one for each street. Some months ago I mentioned .the dangerous crossings at Newtown School to a friend whp is a school teacher in Los* Angeles. She replied: "We have sub-walks here, and find them very satisfactory." My two small girls never leave home -without a final warning, and in bad weather I meet them wherever possible.—l am, etc., SAFETY FIRST.
