AUSTIN STREET

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—Can' anything be done to induce the civic authorities to give some attention to Austin street? The street is one ?, the °ldest str*ets in Wellington, and the dwellers there were paying rates.when JteJburn was a large farm. To-day Kelburn boasts of its tar-sealed streets and roads, whilst in Austin street one can seldom open a window for fear of the clouds of dust that seek entrance. Loads ot small metal have been spread on the street, and every now and again a motorraker is used to bring the metal to the centre of the street. Tar-sealing would have been less expensive in the long run, better for the residents' health, pockets and temper, as well as for the appearauces of their homes outside and inside, for at present the racing motors day and night raise the dust in clouds. At present, at the ccrner of Austin arid Elizabeth streets, the said metal is, and has been for over one month, nearly a foot. deep in the gutter, and the pavement is sprinkled with pieces of the metal flung there by the passing traffic. We do not wish to be laughed at, as the Hawker street residents were when they approached the council with a jußt complaint; but we do wish for the Mayor and the councillors to come, during fine weather, and see for themselves. We would like them to come on foot, not by motor-car, wear dark clothes, and then look at one another afterwards. Dust every day, except when it rains, and the water cart would be a novelty in Austin street, —I am, etc> LET THERE BE PEACE.
