AMATEUR ATHLETICS

SATISFACTORY YEAR

I• ; ASSOCIATION'S FINANCIAL

POSITION

» Moving the adoption of the annual re*port and balance-sheet, details of which ; have appeared in "The Post," at the

'annual meeting of the New Zealand Ama;teur Athletic Association last evening, Mr. <R. W. Jl'Villy, the president, said it was ;a matter for congratulation that the fin;ances of the association were in a satisfac-

Itbry condition. When one compared the

Ipresent position with that existing about Jfive years ago one could not help being

■struck with the very sound progress that ! ihad been made in the all-important mat-

ter of putting the finances in a satisfac-

,Tory condition. On behalf of the council, ;he wished to offer sincere and hearty congratulations to J. W. Savidan (Auck-

land) for his feat in winning three times

'in succession the New Zealand cross-coun-championship. He also wished to congratulate all other competitors for the -^support they had given the association and :!;the sterling performances they had registered.

i Mr. H. I. Austad "joined with the president in his Temarks regarding the fin:ancial position. The past year had not tieeo a very strenuous one for the council, because there had been no tour by an overseas team, but at the same time ,he thought they could claim that it had ■•been a successful one. • : Several matters were touched on by JMr. A. C. Kitto, president of the Wellington Centre "and a vice-president of the He referred to the proposed •'Australia-New Zealand contests, stressing ;the fact that Ne-w Zealand, as it had been I iprone to do in the past, should not be "made to shoulder the baby so far as ex'■'■penses was concerned. Mr. Kitto also ex-j 'pressed the hope that the centres would ;^Ke consulted in any move that was made ■regarding the suggested contests. Dealing ; with the sport ■in various parts of- the '■* Dominion, Mr. Kitto mentioned that sev-i'-eral parts o£ the cquntry • -were in need ' of all' assistance possible. In certain parts ,?of TSTew Zealand the sport was flourish--ing and in other parts all that -was necessary was a. match to kindle the material 'into a flame. With regard to finance he ' suggested that in future the council 'should defail in its balance-sheet in proper iform the amounts received from each inJdividual centre. ; -Replying, Mr. M'Villy. assured Mr. Kitto '■that the financial aspect of the proposed "'New Zealand-Australia contests would re.'ceive full-.consideration as soon as something of a concrete nature was obtained. The idea o£ the council at the present time ■was to try and set up a fund so that when V the time arrived the council would have moaey to meet any expense New Zealand -•would rightly have to bear. The coun;'cil's sympathies were wholeheartedly with Hhe sport, and so far as the council as a body was concerned it would do all in its power to foster amateur, athletics. The report and balance-sheet were •adopted. :.; ELECTION OF OFFICERS. ■( Officers were elected as follows: Patron, • His Excellency tlie Governor-General; pre- " sident. Mr. R. W. ' Reference was made by Mr. M'Villy to the iwork in the interests of sport of Mr. W. Morton, who has resigned from the .postion of president of tho Auckland •Centre. It was decided to place on record 'the council's appreciation of Mr. Morton's •services and the regret the council feels that through pressure of business he is ;.nnable to continue to fill the position.

< CHAMPIONSHIPS. •: The 1930-31 New Zealand track and field championships were allocated to the Otago Centre and the 1929-30 New Zealand cross-country championship to the Wei-

lington Centre. As no applications were received for the 1929-30 New Zealand road cycling championship, the question of allocation was deferred. It was decided to provide a teams' shield for the New Zealand cross-country championship. Applications from the Stratford and Eltham Clubs for affiliation were granted. The following reinstatements were approved:—F. L. Eustege (Wellington), S. A. Gane (Wellington), I. D. Fauchelle (Wellington), K. E. A. Yanko (Waipukuiau), F. J. Alabaster (Canterbury). CANADIAN TOUR. With regard to the Canadian tour it was announced that no further advice had been received from the Canadian representative, Mr. Robinson, since the cable message stating that efforts were being made to secure leave of absence for P. M'Williams, the Olympic sprint champion. It was decided to send another cable message to Mr. Robinson asking for information. N.Z. CYCLE CHAMPIONSHIP. Mr. E. G. Guy said he had been asked to move by the Canterbury Centre that the distance ot the New Zealand road cycling championship should be increased from 50 miles to 100 miles. The Canterbury Centre, said Mr. Guy, considered that the change would be in the right direction, especially in view of the fact that several of the centres had their own 100 miles events. The proposal was left in the hands of the Rules Committee.
