SYNOPSIS OF LAST 24 HOURS.

A rather intense depression of the westerly type passed eastwards of the South Island last night, while barometers have remained fairly high over the northern portion of the Dominion. Consequently strong and squally north to west winds have prevailed, especially from Cook Strait southwards where, at places, they have reached gale force. Heavy rain has fallen on the west coast of the South Island, and a few scattered showers have been experienced on the east coast of the South Island, and also In the Taranakl Bight, while the northern half of the North Island has had mainly -fair weather: Temperatures have continued to be mild generally.
