BOWLING. Crook (Kilbirnie) 4 for 31 ' Rotherham (Petone) 4 for 4G Nelson (University) 1 for 82 While some teams were struggling for runs on Saturday afternoon, others were reaping a harvest at the expense of the bowlers. Conditions generally were of the right order for cricket, although a strong northerly wind was in evidence. C. S. Dempster and H. Foley, who have been associated in a number of outstanding partnerships, .were on the job again at the- Hutt Recreation Ground, and before they were separated Institute's total was 255. This was not a record for the first wicket, but it was one of the best on record in local senior cricket. Dempster's ■ contribution was 137, and Foley reached 162 before being dismissed. It was a great performance on the part of these two players. ' Before stumps were drawn for the day D. Burtand M. Bilby carried the score to 385 without further loss. Even faster scoring was carried out by Wellington in their match with University at the Basin Reserve. Airey and Hollings . were associated in a century partnership for the first wicket, and Hollings and Wiren made a bigger stand for the second wicket. All three played splendidly, with Hollings right back to his best form in compiling 145. Late in the day Whyte and Cousines dealt heavily with the tired -bowling, and at stumps the score was 407 for six wickets. On the other wicket at ;ihe Basin Reserve Old Boys made only ;a moderate showing against Kilbiruie, their score being 131, to which Kilbirnie replied with 129 for the loss of five wickets. Midland, playing against Petone at Petone, made only the same total as Old Boys, and at the end of the day's play Petone had made 74 for the loss of three wickets.
