ASSISTED PASSAGES

ACTION BY AUSTRALIA

BEFEBENCE Atf HOME

British Official Wireless.

JtUGBY, 13th November.

In the House of Commons, Mr. Arthur Ponsonby, Under-Secretary for the Dominions, stated that a telegram had been received from the Prime Minister, of thG Commonwealth of Australia stating that it had been decided to suspend for the present 1110 grant of assisted passages to Australia. He had not received any communication on the subject from any of the State Governments, but would point out that under the arrangements in force the grant of assisted passages was a matter for the Commonwealth and not the State Governments.

Mr. Ponsonby added: "I am satisfied that all-parts of the British Empire oversea are sympathic to migration from this country, but the respective Governments must necessarily reserve the right to control the movement of assisted migrants in accordance with local economic conditions. The question of suitability of the various parts of the Empire for emigration from this country depends on many factors which cannot be discussed within the limits of answering a Parliamentary question."
