The Sooth Island Leads.

It is customary for North Island-horses 1 to go to Riccarton at Cup time and col--1 le'ct practically all the plums. This year there has been quite a different story, for of the twenty-four races decided to •date sixteen have gone to the South Island and or>V eight to the North. In addition of the sixteen Southern successes ,*ix were, leading events, in the New Zealand and Canterbury Cups with Chide, the Welcome/Stakes with Praise, Derby •with Honour,' Metropolitan Handicap with .Rabbi, and Jockey Club Handicap with Full Feather. The North Island main ■wins l^ve been the Stewards' Handicap White Fang, the Criterion Handicap vith Toseuma, and the Oaks with Eaglet. As many of the North Islanders are coming home "without waiting for the last day to-morrow, : the tally is not likeljl- to be improved to any great degree. .

Fate's Sly Jab,

Backers at Riccarton on Wednesday ■K-ere having a great time witli odda-on favourites returning dividends of very meagre dimensions in three races, and rank outsiders prevailing in the handicaps. The seventh race, however, promised a recovery for the observant ones, tvho fastened on to Make Up as a good proposition at jusrt a reasonably payable price. A gelding with the rather ominous name of The Bailiff proved their undoing, however,- in a very, close-finish. The way the meeting has progressed for most „ North Islanders the result was quite apropos. ' ■■' : : '■■■■-.:'■■ Chide. Chide settled the last doubta as to his Quality by his win in the Canterbury Cup at Riccarton' on Wednesday. Certainly the opposition was not strong, but the field ■was better numerically than expected, and provided a race well worth the traditions of the event. Chide won pulling up from a useful four-year-old in Concentrate, ■whose finishing effort must have pleased his connections. Chide was not handicapped for th<2 last day of the meeting, and ■will take on the weight-for-age event again to-morrow, the Stead Gold Cup. f Concentrate was very sore prior to the Canterbury Cup, and i' was only when lie was well warmed up in the concluding stages that he was fit to give of his best. Full Feather. Full Feather was in a real galloping mood on Wednesday at Riccarton; andl illustrated what he is. capable of doing by covering the mile attached to the JoekeyClub Handicap in lmin 37 4-ssee. Full Feather gave much promise in his early two-year-old career, as, after winning the Hopeful Stakes at Trentham, he dead-heated with Nightmarch in the Hopeiul Handicap at Dunedin, finishing up the season with a third placing to Goblin Market and Chide in the Middle Park Plate. Last term he failed to get on the, •winning list, but was placed second three times and third once. Wednesday ■ saw his fourth appearance this season, his only previous placing being when he ran third to Royal Game and Courageous in the Islington Handicap at the Grand National Meeting. Full Feather has suffered a good deal at times from soreness, and was unable to go to the Wellington Sleeting on that account. He had not done much strenuous work since, and his . 3ucces3 under . the circumstances was a general surprise. v Odds and Ends. Watch. Officer, winner of the Wellesley Stakes at Trentham, has been sold to an Australian buyer for 1500 guineas'. Watch Officer" is "engaged in the A.J.C. Champagne and Sires' Produce Stakes. : F. D. Jones arrived back in Christchurch on Wednesday with Paquito. Teheka has been sold, and will race in the interests of the Riccarton trainer D. Campbell. - .- ■ ■ •■ ■ ■ While Glengariff was being exercised at Riccarton on Thursday morning .he stumbled;, breaking a shoulder. He was subsequently destroyed. T. Webster is making-good pVogress towards, recovery, and the operation he underwent on Monday is proving successful.
