The fire commenced .' at the rear of the Commercial Hotel, a building of IS rooms, and spread rapid- ' ly to an adjoining, empty shop and ' dwelling of five, rooms and. to'"' a six-roomea dwelling. occupied by Mr. A. Johnston. In ttie ' absence of a water supply and' hre-fightmg appliances, the-three.buiia-' ings were totally destroyed. The blaze?' spread so Japidly that the' Johnstons 'L escaped with only a few personal effects. Tlie'hotel was unoccupied,' beinW' under renovation. The insurances qn.', the hotel are not available. The unoccupied shop and dwelling were owned 7 by T. J. M'Kee and insured for £150 in the Guardian Office. Mr. Johnston's house was owned by Mr. C. E. Holm, of Auckland. The insurances are not available.
