AUCKLAND DREAM
BRIDGE OPENS
(By /Telegraph.—Press Association.)
AUCKLAND 14th November
The Commission appointed to inquire into the question oi' constructing a bridge across Waiteinaia. Harbour opened to-day, Mr. James Marehbanks (chairman) presiding. The- Harbour Bridge Association said the preparation of its case was not complete, and urged that borings should first be taken with the money authorised by the Government, so that definite particulars of the cost could be formulated.
After some discussion, the chairman said he thought the association laid too much stress on the borings. The Commission would attend to that matter in due course. In the meantime it wanted information .as to population and, so on.
Mr. P. W. Furkert, Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department, a member of the Commission, said that before troubling about borings the Commission should be assured that the bridge was really needed. The chairman explained that what the Commission wanted was population statistics and so on. "He asked if statistics and other necessary information could be ready by the end of the month.
The various counsel agreed that they would be ready with their shares. . After further observations, the chairman said the Commission would adjourn to inspect the suggested sites and some of the adjacent districts, and would sit again to-morrow morning, when any witnesses who wished to give evidence would be heard. It would return to Wellington at the week-end and come back to Auckland at the end' of the month.
