EFFECT OF COAL STRIKE

The threatened strike . of coal miners on the West Coast will have a serious effect on all gas supplying authorities in the Dominion. Dependent as they are at present entirely on New Zealand coal, they would soon have to cease work altogether if their supply were, to fail. The*-matter ' was mentioned at the meeting of the Petone and Lower Hutt Gas Lighting Board last night, and the chairman (Mr. W. G. Lodder) jocularly remarked that if the West Coast coal supply did cease; the board would speedily be relieved of all the worry it had at present in trying to maintain a sufficient supply of gas. According to the report of the works manager, the board had 698 tons of coal in stock on Ist November, a quantity which would last for about six weeks.
