POLLING TO-DAY

FEDERAL ELECTIONS

PROSPECT OF PARTIES

STALEMATE A POSSIBILITY

United Press Association—By Electric Tele-

graph—Copyright.

SYDNEY, llth October.

The election campaign, which is described as one of the bitterest on re : cord, closed to-night with noise and frenzy, but the roar of battle was heard loudest at North Sydney, where Mr. Hughes is having the hardest campaign of his career, and at Wentworth, where Mr. Marks is fighting for dear life. Sir Littleton Groom is expected to have a close call at Darling Downs, Queensland. Mr." Maxwell, however, is regarded as safe for re-election at Fawkner, in Victoria. Both the party leaders, Messrs. Bruce (Nationalist) and Scullin (Labour) expect working majorities, while, a section of the Press expresses the opinion that neither side will achieve a decent majority, probably' culminating in a- stalemate. Tho belief is expressed that, if Mr. Bruce loses ground at all, it will be in New South Wales and Tasmania. . . ■ ! Tho polling to-morrow will be from S a.m. till S p.m. The election was the result of a defeat of the Bruce Government on aa amendment movement by Mr. W. M. Hughes to postpone the abolition of the Federal Arbitratio i Court until a referendum had been taken or a General Election held. Five members of the Nationalist Party—Messrs. Hughes, Marks,. Maxwell, Mann, and M' Williams—voted for the amendment, which was carried.
