MARRIAGE LAW
AMENDMENT AGREED TO
EMPIRE UNIFORMITY?
Tho Marriage Amendment Bill, yalidating marriage with a deceased wife's niece or a deceased husband's nephew,' survived a destructive amendment in the Legislative Council'yesterday. Continuing the third reading after "The Post" went to press yesterday, the Hon. "W. Earnshaw moved an amendment that it be read the third time three mouths hence. He espressed the belief that it was undesirable .that such marriages should take place. There should be some general movement throughout the Empire before such a change was made. •
Sir Francis Bell said we had the right to legislate independently, but it was a recognised principle throughout the Em. piie that at least there should be uniformity in regard to legitimacy. The amendment was lost by 13 votes to 22, the division list being as follows:— - -
Tor the Amendment (1?).—Bell, Carririgton, Clark, Collins, Earnshaw, Hawko, Mitchelson, Rhodes, Eikihana, Sinclair, Snodgrass, Weston, Witty. Against the Amendment (22).-^Ailon, Barr, Craigie, Fleming, Garland, Gow Hall-Jones, Hanan, Isjtt, Lang, MacGregor, M' In tyro, Malcolm, Maunder, Mooro, Newman, Reed, Scott, Sidey, Smith, Stewart, Thomson.
