THE SCARLET TERROR

Was the letter from the Scarlet Terror? Peter rushed over to it and tore the envelope open eagerly, but his eagerness vanished, for the letter ran thus :—

A quarter of an hour later the two youngsters drove off to the station in a taxi
"Gee, what a corker manor house," gasped Bill as the two chums were driven up the grave drive of a huge house with lofty towers and i™ dinging to its walls.- Bill payed the taxi driver and walked up a few steps to a weather-beaten door and lifted the iron knocker. Bomp!! - It fell with a dull thump and Bill and Peter waited for the door to ?£™ P-T i •3 footman fPPeared, took their luggage, and conducted them into a luxurious room where a log crackled and roared in a tiled hreplace. boon a jovial-faced man entered and Peter introduced Bill to uncle Dick.
«o" PleaSe<* t0 nieet you > sir '" ginned Bill. Same to you, youngster," replied Uncle Dick", "I wanted to meet you, so Ive had my wish, eh?" After-a few minutes talk Bill went into the music-room lo play the piano, while P etei - went into, the library to read. Five minutes later Bill was startled to hear an appaling cry from the library. Dashing in,, Bill was horrified to find that Peter was nowhere to be seen—had vanished Bill ran across the soft carpet.
