N.Z. BOYS FOR FARMS
DEPARTMENTS LINKED UP
LABOUR AND IMMIGRATION
Tho Minister of Labour' (tho Hon. W. A. Veitch) announced that Cabinet has decided to amalgamate the Departments of Labour and Immigration, so as to utiliso the organisation of the latter Department 'to distribute young New Zealan&ers into suitable employment on farms, in conformity with tho Government's recent decision on this subject. v Tho Hon. J. G, Cobbe at present holds the portfolio of Immigration, but it is believed likely that he will transfer it shortly to Mr. Veitch. As Mr. F. W. Eowley is retiring from the Secretaryship of the Labour Department, it is considered probable that Mr. H. D. Thomson, Undersecretary of the Immigration Department, mil continue to hold' that position, in conjunction with that of permanent head of the Labour Department. When announcing recently that Cabinet had decided to inaugurate a scheme of apprenticing Now Zealand boys to farmers, tho Prime Minister stated that the necessary details would be arranged through tho Labour Department and the Immigration Dopartmont. Although the latter Department is not now bringing many boys out from Home for farm work, its officials are familiar with the machinery for engaging boys ' with farmers, hence the reason for utilising its services in that way so far as New Zoaland boys are concerned.
