DOGS AND POISON
■ !■ (To the Editor.) i Sir,—Will you kindly spare me space in your paper.to draw the attention of the o U -d£ ri tles ' and especially members of the H.i*.UA., to an inhuman practice that is being adopted at the present time of poisoning dogs, at the Wallaceville laboratory.. During the past few weeks a large percentage of household pets in and around Wallaceville have been killed by poisoned meat laid in the paddocks of the laboratory. There are no notices of any kind displayed to warn the public of the proximity of poison. Surely there is something wrong here. Naturally the meat lying about entices dogs there who would otherwise never go near the place. Only a. small percentage of dogs worry sheep, and .evidently the wrong dog gets-the, bait nine times out of ten. , Surely some other method could be adopted of coping with the nuisance during the lambing season. Xhere are several men employed on the farmland shooting the dogs caught in the act of worrying sheep would surely be more effective and just.—l am, etc., . ' MINDS MY.DOG.'
When this letter was submitted to officers o£ the Agricultural Department, it ■was stated that notices warping owners oi dogs have been exhibited for years at the Wallaceville laboratory. The ambtmt of sheep-worrying has been excessive, and drastic action has been necessary. To employ, men day and night to shoot dogs is not practicable, hence the laying of poisoned meat. Possibly at times the wrong dog takes the poison, but the remedy lies in the owner's, hands, namely, to keep his or Met dogirpin wawfermg, . .
