FORESTERS CONFER
THE PROBLEM OF,' NOISE
(From "The Post'i" RepreienUtlvt.) LONDON, 3th August. Nearly eight hundred people, including some- from New Zealand, aro attending the Foresters' Conference at Weymouth. In his address, the High Obiof Ranger (Mr. E. B. Taylor, of Hull) said that noise was one of the newer problems that had to be faced to-day.
'Wo aro told," he said, "that at some of the traflic hubs workers in business premises have, within two years, to leave their employment with their nervo systems wrecked. What was a nice peaceful countryside baa been invaded by the motor horn day and night. The resulting increase of nervous disorders consequent upon a nation living upon the edge of its nerves makes the question one of first-class importance." Mr. Taylor spoke of the heavy calls on such societies as that of the Foresters through the ravages of influenza, whose toll of life was altogether underestimated.
Viscount Granborne, M.P. for South Dorset, said the tendency to-day was for the State to take over activities which hart previously been done by the individual. ■■ "It would be a thousand pities if this increase oE Stato action should be allowed to lesson tho feeling of responsibility towards others. To whatever sphere State action may extend, I hope that if it encroaches on ground covered by the great friendly societies it will not conflict but harmonise with them. " '
