HARRIERS

ANNUAL RELAY RACE

At Hataitai on Saturday afternoon the Hutt Valley Harriers created something of a surprise in running Brooklyn very close for tho Shaw Baton in the annual relay race for the trophy. Two teams were entered by each of the Olympic, Hutt Valley, and Wellington Clubs, with one entry from Brooklyn. The Scottish Club did not compete.

In the first of the one mile laps J. Shepphard (Wellington) beat M'Carthy (Hutt Valley) by ten yards. Mulcahy (Wellington) won tho second lap from Dudley (Hutt Valley). When Brooklyn were leading in the fourth lap, Bothwell failed to follow the trail, and D. Matson (Hutt Valley) was able to. gain the lead. Cutbush (Hutt Valley) had a lead of about fifteen yards over, Pedereen (Brooklyn) when the final lap was commenced, but Pedersen was too good for his opponent, and won fairly easily. The results were:— Brooklyu (Barclay, Davies, Pedersen, . Eothwell, Prosser, Bibby) 1 Hutt Valley (Smith, M'Carthy, Matson, * Dudley, Cutbush, Lewis) 2 Wellington (Shcpphard, Mulcahy, Whelan, Morris, Fraser, Watson) . 3 Olympic finished last, and were never in the lead."
