ROWING

SEASON OPENED

WHALEBOAT RACES

-'A fresh north-westerly wind made the water unsuitable for the opening of the rowing season on Saturday afternoon, and the inter-club contest for the Redding shield was postponed till next Saturday, when the season will be opened at Petone. The ceremony of declaring the season open, was performed by the Mayor (Mr. G. A. Troup), who referred to the important part rowing played in the development of youth, and to the benefits to be derived from the sport generally. In reference to the proposed removal of the boatsheds, he said that it was only a matter of time when rowing would have to go to some other part of the harbour. He had endeavoured to make that time as distant as possible, but when it did come he could assure the rowing fraternity that they would have a very sympathetic body in the Wellington City Council. "If we eau find you suitable quarters in some other part of the harbour, then we will consider it our duty to help you to the' utmost o four capacity," he said. Mr Troup referred to the increase in the trouble caused through oil in the harbour bringing flotsam and .jetsam, which did not make the water attractive from a swimming point of view. He congratulated ttt& rowing; fraternity upon a championship having come to Wellington, and wished the clubs a most successful season A series of whaleboat races'was held by crews from the three clubs:— • The crews were:-Petone: Palamountain, trimbiet, Boswcll, Rodda,'Benge Wellington: Shanley, Beasley, Luke Scanlan, M'Kmley, Clark,' Coomber Ogilvey, Carpenter, Hennessey. Star: Cooke, Mullins, Hinkley, Thomas, Field: Bell, Gane, Waddell, Gibbons' Kees; Moffatt, Cudby, Kemp, Coyle, Mur-

Star crews beat Wellington and Petohe crews in the eliminating rounds, and the final, contested between Bell and Cooke was won by Bell by two feet. In the evening a dance was held in the club house.
