It is understood that the'Tuatea, which was recently purchased from the Union Company by Mr. A. A. Perano, will be utilised In a passenger and cargo service In the Queen Charlotte Sounds. The vessel will leave Auckland for Picton about the end of next week. When the Tuatea was built for the Union Company in Auckland in 1905, there were several large passenger steamers in the Auckland to Dunedin coastal service, which then was also a continuation of the Auckland-Sydney service. All the passenger steamers called at Gisborne, and the Tuatea was kept busy at that port in tendering the vessels in the bay. During the 24 years she was engaged In the work she carried many thousands of passengers from ship to shore. The building of the Main Trunk railway resulted in a' falling-off in the East Coast passenger service until the large passenger steamers had to be withdrawn. In later years road improvements brought about an increase in the motor traffic to such an extent that the company's Auckland-Gisborne-Napier passenger service also had to be abandoned. With the sale of the Tuatea the last link In what, was once a very busy coastal traffic has been severed, the large and small . passenger steamers having been superseded by up-to-date cargo vessels. . ISLANDS FRUIT TRADE. Having made her last trip to the Cook Islands tills year, tho Union Company's steamer Waipahi left Rarotonga for Auckland yesterday with a cargo of fruit and other Island produce.' She is due about Wednesday morning. Although the vessel will not return to the Cook Islands this year, she Is to make two trips to other islands before Christmas. The company has made'arrangements for her to load fruit at Apia for Auckland on 31st October, and in anticipation of the extra demand for fruit on account of tile Christmas trade she Is" scheduled to load at Suva on sth December, - and to reach Auckland about five days later. Fruit cargoes will also be brought by the Tofua, which is scheduled to load at Suva as usual on 21st November and 19th December. KOSMOS DUE TO-NIGHT. Latest advice from the factory ship Kosmos, en route from Norway, states that she expects to arrive off Wellington Heads at about 11 o'clock to-night. She will enter tho harbour In the early hours of thcr morning, and will anchor in tho stream with her seven catchers. After transferring a quantity of explosives to the smaller vessels, tho Kosmos will move up to her berth some time to-morrow, at Pipiteii Wharf, where she will take in water und load stores. • The whale catchers, which burn oil fuel, will remain In the stream all the time they aro at Wellington. GOLDEN CLOUD DISCHARGING. The Golden Cloud arrived at Wellington early this morning from-Los Angeles, via Auckland, she is continuing discharge of timber and genera 1 merchandise,. Shu will sail on Saturday for Timaru and Duncdin. NORFOLK REPORTED!
