GENEROUS GOVERNMENT
The Government of Prince Edward Island (Cuuada) lias uiado a handsome gesture in connection witu-n number of frauds—for which tho Government was iv 2iu way responsible—on British naval and military cx-oilicors, by unanimously passing a Bill to cqinpensato those who lost their money as tho result of the frauds. Tho cx-officors were prevailed upon by a man representing himself as an agont iv Great Britain of tho Government of tho island to part -with money for tho purchaso of silver fox farms, which wcro either worthless or non-existent. Although not legally rosponsible, tho Government of Prince Edward Island has decided to pay the victims both capital ana interest. It is understood (says tho "Morning ■Post") that a moderately largo sum of money-is involved, but it is not known how many, vietima thcro . arc. Some havo settled in tho island; others disappeared as soon as they discovered that they had boon victimised. Nearly all of thorn wero . young pensionable cx-offieers, who disposed of their money without making inquiries as to the' bona fides of tho individuaj with whom they had got into communication, and did not discover that they had been duped until they reached the island.
