GROWERS' PROBLEMS

CONSIDERED AT CONFERENCE

A conference of delegates from associations in tKe fruit growing areas'was held yesterday to consider matters relating to the, export trade, the conference being the result of a motion passed at the Dominion conference of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers' Federation held last July. Mr. J. L. Brown, chairman of the Fruit Export Control Board, presided over an attendance of over thirty. Other members' of the board present were: Messrs. T. C. Brash, Dennis Neal, A. M. Robertson, H. S. Izard, and E. H. Williams. r

. Mr. J. Brunt (Nelson) moved that the Control Board report regarding the opening of new markets, particularly in respect:to South America and Eastern countries, and stated that shipping representatives- from Brazil, Hamburg, and the East were,now in the Dominion.

Mr. T. C. Brash said that the Wellington Chamber,of Commerce was negotiating for a service, to the East."

The remit was adopted.. A remit that it be compulsory that the grower's registered number be placed on the case as well as upon the label, was amended to read. "that growers be encouraged to place," etc., and was carried in that form.

A remit that the fullest investigation be made into the discrepancies which occur between actual shipments by growers and out-turn at destination, also iuto methods of claiming on such shortages, and the amounts claimed for, with particular reference to the final statements of shortage pools in the 1928 season, was,adopted. , "That the board's attention be drawn to the recurring, loss shown on. account of sales by cases shown aswasty, ullaged, slack, sample, etc. Is this a legitimate loss, and, if so, can the board suggest■ a remedy?" was adopted. The following remit was adopted: "That the overseas representative of tho Control Board report on condition and appearance of fruit at destination, particularly in regard to pack, cases labels, etc., the report to be available prior to the next conference.

The following remits were referred to the Control Board for favourable consideration: " "

That Statesman be permitted to tho Continent in sizes 80-198.

That Statesman be permitted to South America in sizes 80-198.

That "M'lntosh Red" be included on the South American Export List in sizes

That grade regulations covering Worcester Pearmain be fully investigated in view of prices realised indicating that extra fancy and fancy were over-mature, whereas good grade appeared to be in bettor condition.

It was further agreed that Bockwood be included in tho above remits. The question of giving preferential treatment to the more delicate varieties of apples and pears was referred to tho Control Board.

supports tho principle of local loading of export fruit wherever possible, and recommends the master to the Control Board for favourable consideration. The conference approved a remit that a trial shipment of "Broome Park" pears bo made to the United Kingdom nest season.

A resolution was carried urging that an endeavour be made to make final payments on export fruit at an earlier date, or in the alternative pay out additional advances.

The action of the Control Board in seeking to prevent the export business from passing into private interests was confirmed by tho conference.

The shipping of export fruit in the same rotation in which it was received was recommended. :

Without discussion a remit was carried asking that steps be taken to eliminate rough handling of export fruit in Wellington and ; other places. Eeference was made to the glutted state of the local pear market, and the Control Board was urged to seek for further outlets for the sale of pears. A recommendation that experimental shipments of apples and pears, ■ other than the varieties and sizes scheduled in the Government regulations, bo forwarded to the United Kingdom, the Continent of Europe, South America, Canada, and other possible new markets, ,-was carried. It was decided to hold an export conference annually. ■ ; .
