OLD CHIMNEYS TO COME DOWN
The days of tho two old city pd\vcr stations, the tr^nway station in Wakefield street an" the lighting station in Mercer street, aro' over, and tho two brick chimney stacks aro of no further use. In tho last shake one of them was given rather too much of a twist to bo comfortable for those' working in the building almost boneath it, and this hastened tho decision that both should be demolished. A method employed fairly commonly overseas when there is little open space about stacks to be demolished is to fire charges so as to blow out the whole baso, with tho result that tho chimney drops *nd collapses rather than falls, but this is a very expert business and will vnot be attempted with these two stacks. They will bo taken down from tho top, brick by brick, as was done in the case of tho old destructor chimney at Clyde quay. The bricks are set in lime mortar, but whether it is going to pay to clean, them for re-use has yet to be proved.
