AIR SHOW
TO BE HELD ON LABOUR DAY!
It is hoped, says the Mayor, Mr.. G, A. Troup, that the postponed air pageaiit, by which the Eongotai airport' will bo opened, will bo held on Labour Day, 28th.October. By that time the whole area should be in good flying condition, and the fencing, to ensure that the flying ground could be kepi u-?z 0± the PubUe> and particularly children, should bo in position. Disastrous experience on other flying grounds had too often shown the necessity for such safeguards. The arrangements' for . the pageant were in the hands of the Aero Club said Mr. Troup, and the secretary, Mr. N. M'Arthur, had told him that the club was expecting to arrange for about ten machines, so that a very good show indeed should be put on. The full equipment of the airport, Mr. Troup added, would take some time! Plans were being prepared for. the first hangar, and arrangements had been made to take over the old hangar, built on land nearby. The equipment of a modern airpor^ included a set of elec trie night lighting and signalling lights* and these would come later. The council, Mr. ,Troup holds, chosa wisely in going to Eongotai for its airport, for there are open spaces which may be used as emergency landing, grounds all about—the golf links, Lyall Bay beach, the recreation grounds at Kilbirnie and Newtown, and Athletic and Wakefield Parks, while seaplanes may land in Evans, Lyall, or Worser Bay, aeording to the. weather conditions. Eventually it may be necessary* to extend the Eongotai area by taking in a part of the golf links, concluded Mr. Troup, but that development was probably a long way ahead.
