AUSTRALASIAN CHESS REVIEW
A new chess monthly has been launched in Sydney under llie above title. The editor is Mr. Cecil J. S. Purdy, the young Australian expert, who won the New Zealand championship at the Nelson Congress (1024-25). The "News and Notes" column deals most interestingly with chess in the various States, and New Zealand also gets "a splendid hearing." About a dozen instructive games are splendidly annoted, and there are useful articles on "The Counter Attack," and "Exchanging." The "Problem Pages" are in the very capable hands of Mr. 1\ T. Hawes, well known as one-of the best composers in the Southern Hemisphere. Two of the 30 pages are devoted to Bridge (by "Jack High"). There have been a few previous chess monthlies in Australia, but they have all bocorae defunct for want of adequate support. The present venture has been declared by a competent critic to be a decided advance on any of its predecessors. It is worth more than the tuodest subscription asked, viz., 7s 6d per annum (post free). Mr. F. K. Kclling has promised to remit local subscriptions to Mr. Purdy. He forwarded ten subscriptions last week It may be added that Mr. Purdy circulated over 2000 copies of the first number (July) gratis throughout Australia and New Zealand, so that enthusiasts could see for themselves the many merits of the magazine that they are earnestly invited to support. An Australian editor, in a favourable review of the "A.C.R." states that j it bids fair to rank with the world's best.
