CHARGES AGAINST MOTORIST

PALMERSTON N., This Day. On Saturday evening Constable E. Comptou endeavoured to arrest an allegedly intoxicated motorist, and his order to stop not being obeyed, the constable jumped on the running board and tried to switch off the engine. He lost his hold, however, and the driver retained his freedom.
The first act of the sequel took place at the Police Court yesterday morning, .when Frederick Chosham, farmer, of Rangiotu, was charged that on 13th July, while in a state of intoxication ho was in charge of a motor car in Rangitikei street; that he failed to stop when requested to do so; that he assaulted Comptou while in the execution of his duty and finally that he wilfully damaged the constable's uniform.
Mr. A. M. Ongley, who appeared for the prisoner, pleaded not guilty to all tlio charges. A remand till 22iid July was granted, on bail.
