SERIES OF CRIMES
COMMITTAL FOE SENTENCE

NELSON, This Day. Since ho escaped from prison early in December last year, Daniel Henry Barnaby, who was arrested in Nelson a fortnight ago, has been adding to his list of crimes with considerable rapidity. He attracted the attention of the Nelson police when he broke into the office at L. N. Montgomery's garage, and left with £6 0s 3d in cash and a pair of motor gloves valued at 255. As reported previously, he was arrested after a chase to Tahuna, and appeared at the Magistrate's Court charged with the above offence. Detective Sinclair, however, had recognised the accused as an escaped prisoner who was also suspected of many more crimes, and the accused accordingly appeared before Mr. T. E. Maunsell, S.M., to answer eighteen charges of theft or wrongful conversion at Nelson, Tokaanu, Drnry Waitangaru, Ngatea, Auckland, Wellington, and Takaka. Detective Sinclair stated that on sth December last year the accused escaped from the Hautu prison, where he was serving a sentence of five years for breaking, entering, and theft, and also for escaping from prison. He was sentenced for these offences at luvercargill on 19th May, 1925, and at the time of Ins escape had fully 18 months to The Magistrate, after hearing evidence, informed the accused that it was proposed to commit him for trial The accused intimated that he desired to plead guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Conrt at Wellington for
