THEFT OF MONEY

Alter making the acquaintance of a man on the boat from Lyttelton to Wellington, Robert Gardner, aged 28, from Dunedin suggested to his new friend, who had £70 in his possession, that lie should stay with him at a hotel in town. While the friend T aS,"V™ b? thPom at the hotel, Gardner took £30 of the money, which he had seen counted in the bedroom. These facts were related in the Magistrates Court this morning by Chief Detective Lopdell, after Gardner had pleaded guilty to the theft. The chief detective added that Gardner was a married man, and from circumstances which had come to the knowledge of the police it appeared that it was the accused's intention to leave his wife and go to Sydney with a single woman from Dunedin.

Gardner was remanded for a week to allow (he police to make further inquiries about him.
