. SWs Department of Commerce has announced, after a study of the finances of the Jar East, that these are assuming a.ppsition of increasing importance to the American investing public. Study shows that fronv 1914 to 1928 inclusive nearly a: 1 billion dollars went into Far Eastern issues' publicly offered in the United States... The total investment in these securities,'excluding the Philippines, was §51,258,000. -dollars, of which approxi-mately-three-quarters are represented by Government, provincial, and municipal issues.Large additional investments have been made in business enterprise, philanthropic undertakings, and corporate iß'sues'. not publicly offered. "Australian borr.owing has been one of the outstandirig.';features of our financial relations in recent yearn. Although these did not commence; until the latter part of 1921, they had reached at the close of last year a tpt«l of 246 million dollars. American investments in Australia are largely confined to Commonwealth and State securities;"
