A PETGNE MEETING
COUNCIL'S DIFFICULT POSITION
The Mayor of Pctone was askod at last night's meeting of his council whether he. intended .to call a public meeting in connection with the Earthquake Belief Fund. Councillor J. W. Longman, who made the inquiry, said that many people had asked him if there was' to be a meeting, and he could only say he did not know. The council at its last meeting had decided that it would make no contribution to the fund. Councillor H: A. Ryder thought that some contribution should be rnado by the council. All over New Zealand local bodies were giving, and to upholu the honour and dignity ol! Pctono the council should do likewise. He knew j they were short of money, but would like them to do something. Councillor V. E. Jaeobson said he did not think it just to send a large amount outside the district whea the
council was cutting down its own staff and expenses, and would be called upon to meet cases of acute- distress in Potone. The .Mayor (iv " D. M' Kenzie) stated that he would call a meeting of citizens for Wednesday evening.
