ADMITTED TO PROBATION
Instead of retorting a ring which had been badly made, a jeweller's apprentice Alexander William Campbell, put the ring in his pocket and used new gold for the work. As a result he appeared before Mr. E. Page, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court to-day charged with stealing between Ist May and 28th. June three gold rings, two gold pendants, and two pieces of gold ot a total value-of £3 Is, the property of Murphy and Stewart. . • Chief-Detective Lopdell said that the accused was 20 years of age,' and had been apprenticed to the complainants for 4% years, l'rom the accused's statement to the police it appeared that the thefts from his employers^ had occurred within the last two months or so. When a piece of work had been badly done the accused was asked to do it over again, but instead of retorting the jewellery he put it in his pocket and used new gold. All the property which had been stolen in this wav had been recovered. Appearing for the accused, Mr T S Banna said that the boy had been under ™. c, temptation as his father had been ™,Ke i?
