WANT TO GO BACK
MURCHISON MEN AT NELSON
NO PLACE FOR WOMEN AND
CHILDREN
(From Our Own Correspondent.) NELSON, This Day. The Mayor of Nelson (Mr. AY. J. Moffatt) called a meeting of Murchison residents at the Council Chamber yesterday afternoon, a number of the refugees having expressed a desire to return to their homes. It was stated that at present the wrecked homes were unfit to house women and. children, and only men should go back. Many names were handed in of people desiring to return, and a number more of men wanting employment with the Public Works Department in the work of opening the roads. Mr. B. F. Spiers stated that the road is blocked in several places, and anyone would be foolish to return to the Murehison district. Unable to light fires because of the absence of safe chimneys, the people at Glenhope are putting in a very unpleasant time. Bitterly cold weather, with rain and snow,. has persisted. Earthquake shocks continued during the night. A report from Tophouse yesterday stated that several inches of snow had fallen there. \ The Nelson Girl Guides have arranged for Saturday afternoon a programme of games and afternoon tea for the entertainment of Murchison children. Flooded creeks were the result of heavy rain which, fell last night. Service .cars to Murchison were unable to proceed past Norris 's Gully.
