FINAL SESSION

LONDON CONFERENCE

EMPIRE SERVICE LEAGUE

SYDNEY VENUE 1931

UnittJ Press Association—By Electric Tele- ! graph—Copyright. Australian Presa Association—United 'Service. (Received 2Sth June, 11 a.m.) LONDON, 27th June. Lord Jellieoe was present at the final session of the Empire Service League Conference. General Sir Andrew Russell (New Zealand) presided. A lengthy discussion hinged on the decision where to hold the 1931 conference. Mr. M'Cann moved that the conference meet in Australia. "Australia," he said, "has stood down twice. We now request delegates to give us our rights, tt will be one of the greatest years in Australia's history. We expect a Eoyal Prince to visit' Sydney to open the North Shore bridge." Captain Apperley, supported by Mr. Turnbull, agreed, especially if Lord Jellieoe visited Australia, heading the delegates. He was one of the greatest ambassadors who had ever visited the Antipodes. Sir Andrew Bussell supported Australia. The Canadian delegation opposed Australia, wanting the conference in Canada. The conference divided, resulting in an overwhelming majority for Australia. The Canadians were cheered when they jumped up first to congratulate Australia. ■ • Formal votes of thanks were carried to the Prince of Wales and Lord Jellieoe, who replied: "I serve till I am useless." (Cheers.) The conference then ended.
