THE WAIRAU MASSACRE
(To the Editor.) Sir,—The letter of "J.M." in your paper of tne 24th asks what evidence exists to justify my statement it was "as clear as vJft 6 Eauparajia, along with forty other North and South "Island chiefs, disposed tL \r "*&* M. *he Wairau landS) to the New Zealand Company on the 25thOctober and Bth November, 1839, the Wairau being specifically mentioned in both deeds of purchase.' The extract by "J.M." ends there The answer to his query is in the next sentence of my letter, and there is no need to repeat it. The only weakness in that particular link of the huge chain of evidence there is on the Wairau affray is a statement made several years later by Mr. Frederick i'uckett, wherein he put on record that a chief of Wairau, Eawiri h^^ Ua\ a ' "de!»ed the authenticity of both the alleged sales, and explained that i»i wflr' a? pear in the original deeds, but had been inserted, on an Irasure or by interlineation." There is a most extensive literature on the Wairau affair, the complexities ;o£ which would make a fine field of research for someone inclined to the subject—l am, etc., 25th June. H-"F-
