FIRES IN THE CITY

A fire occurred in the premises of J. Chambers and Son, Cable street, late yesterday afternoon. The oil-separating room on the first floor was damaged by fire and water. The building is insured in the South British for £ 20,000, and the contents are covered to the extent of £33,000 in the same office. While the brigade was proceeding to the scene of the fire two of the firemen, Quirkeand Stewart, were thrown to the road through one of the engines swerving to avoid traffic at the intersection of Cable street and Jervois quay. Fireman Quirkc suffered from slight concussion and shock, and was removed to the Hospital by the City Ambulance. Fireman Stewart received minor injuries, and was able to carry on with his work.

A call was received at 1.40 a.m. to.day to the premises of the Canadian Knight and Whippet Motor ■ Company, where a fire had broken out in the accessory room on the ground floor. The room and contents were slightly damaged by fire and water. The stock and plant were covered by policies, held in the Commercial TXnion office. The building is insured in the same office for £20,000. ■ '
