SAFETY OP RESIDENTS
The Acting Secretary, General Post Office, states that telegraph traffic conditions with Westport are now normal. As there is always ;the possibility of the land lines being' interrupted' by blasting operations, radio ' communication is being maintained. -.:.-.'. The chief postmaster, Greymouth, re-ports:—-"Mails'•;are;, . running through the Gorge daily .with one porterage at a big slip near Tiroroa. The weather is fine. Lyell can; be.-reached on foot, but communication between there and Newton Flat is almost .impossible. Reports, however, indicate tthat residents and others there are. safe, "-"■ The postmaster,.- Murch'isbn, reports: —"Noon: Rivers irunni^g normal over dams. Detonations, .recommenced at dark last ' evening,? -with minor tremors and some heavy one's,'especially'at 2.25; a.m. Relief left for: marooned families in Lower-Maruia<(Paenga). Not expected to return'for-two or three days.: Large gang of. men engaged on opening road to Upper ■ Matakitaki.- Settlers in the Tutaki district are all safe."
