HATAITAI AFFAIRS
DISTRICT NEEDS
A nieetmg of the Hataitai- Municipal Electors' Association was held last evenintr Mr. H. R. Searle being in the chair. Discussion took place on the subjects of roading and footpath work in the district and sharp comment was made upon the failure of the council to complete work on Waipapa road this season. The chairman maintained that sealing had been done in a series of patching operations and that by next year both Waipapa road and Arawa road would have developed a fresh lot of holes. There were signs of disintegration in Arawa road at present Another speaker said that the edge of Waipapa _ road was also showing signs of scouring. It was decided to protest against the work being left uncompleted, and also, against the manner in which that done had been carried out. . ,
In reply to the association's letter on tho subject of chipped milk bottles being used for the delivery 'of milk, the-general manager of the city milk department replied, that it was the custom to scrap bottles to which reasonable exception could be taken, but that bottles only having very small chips were retained in order to avoid waste. The roundsmen could not always see badly chipped bottles, as a large part of the delivery was done in the dark. Instructions would be given in the particular department to see that badly chipped bottles were withdrawn.
A letter was received from the Hataitai School Committee supporting the association in its request for a slot telephone box near the school for the benefit of residents in the district. The chairman said the association had several times approached the Department in . the matter, but not recently. There was no slot telephone from Roseneath until one reached Rewa road,, and a large number of Hataitai residents had to rely on the generosity of private users in case of emergency. It was decided to write to the Department asking fov a slot telephone to be installed in the vicinity of the corner of Hataitai and Arawa roads, near the school. '
The dissatisfaction of residents using the buses at the lack of. co-ordination between bus and tram services, resulting in bus passengers missing: tranis to town, was' again brought up. A letter; Was received from the Tramways Manager.stating that he would see whether the time of the bus complained of could not be advanced to make the connection. ' The chairman remarked that the through cars at that hour were invariably packed.-. Hei did not think the department wanted |o make the buses pay, and the association was up against a brick wall all the "time. He had seen trams leave just as the- bus was arriving at the corner. It was decided, to write ,to the General Manager'ipressing. for the co-ordination of the-"bus and tram services, and also to vefer.-.theimatter to the Eastern Suburbs League. : : .■■■ , . A letter from , the Eastern Suburbs League stated that at a,, meeting to be held shortly matters.to be .discussed' would include the rating on upiinprbved values, Kvans Bay reclamation, and the restoration of the Health Week campaign. Messrs. C. M'lntyre, H. R. Searle, and'P. L. Freeman were elected delegatesto-the Eastern Suburbs Leaprue. : '-. N"; '.'.
